KinetiKs Lab

Why we exist.

Because ‘biodegradable’ should mean something.

The problem is already inside us.

Every year, millions of tons of plastic enter our oceans and waterways. Some of it is labeled biodegradable. But without independent testing, that label is a guess.

The plastic that was supposed to biodegrade didn’t. Microplastics are now in our water, our food, and our blood. Recent studies have found microplastics in human lung tissue, placenta, and brain.

This is why KinetiKs exists. Not to sell plastic. Not to certify it. To measure what actually happens to it.

Founded by Scott William Wollack, who led development of ASTM D8646.

Our work aligns with three United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being.
Ensure healthy lives and well-being for all. Our bioresorption testing measures how fast medical polymers degrade under simulated physiological conditions, giving device makers a measured rate to support their safety assessment.
SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.
Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns. Independent degradation testing gives manufacturers, regulators, and consumers the data to make honest claims about what they’re producing.
SDG 14: Life Below Water.
Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources. Our aquatic biodegradation testing estimates how long a plastic persists in marine, brackish, and fresh water under laboratory conditions.

Why you can trust the results.

Every report is signed by the chemist who led development of the method.

  • 20+ years in plastics and bioplastics.
From polymer formulation to degradation testing. Two decades of hands-on experience with the materials, the chemistry, and the regulations.
  • Led the development of ASTM D8646
The standard for aquatic biodegradation testing, developed alongside scientists and engineers from around the world.
  • EPA Presidential Green Chemistry Award (2016)
Recognised for converting greenhouse gases into commercial-grade biodegradable plastic. The highest U.S. honor in green chemistry.
  • BS in Chemistry & MBA.
BS in Chemistry, Northern Illinois University. MBA, UC Irvine Paul Merage School of Business. Named “Most Innovative Thinker” by the 2019 cohort.

What we won’t do

  • Predict how a plastic behaves at temperatures we didn’t actually test. The math gets unreliable fast, and an unreliable number is worse than no number at all.
  • Pass a sample whose control run failed. If our reference sample (paper) doesn’t break down properly, the run is invalid. We throw it out and start over with fresh material.
  • Skip the toxicity panel, the fluorine screen, or the persistent-chemicals check. “Biodegradable” means nothing if what’s left over is harmful or sticks around forever.
